Unemployment is a huge problem here in the San Francisco Bay Area… and with benefits set to run out there is a huge battle right now for tons of people that need it! It looks like the extension on unemployment benefits has failed!

Dana Hull and Patrick May Mercury News says… The U.S. Senate on Tuesday failed to meet a deadline to extend federal unemployment benefits, threatening half a million Californians with the prospect of losing their benefits by the end of December.

An estimated 454,000 California job seekers are among about 2 million nationwide who will be cut off from weekly unemployment benefits by the end of the year if the federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation program is allowed to lapse.

California’s 12.4 percent unemployment rate is the third-highest in the nation, after Nevada and Michigan, and the federal benefits have been a lifeline for long-term unemployed workers struggling to pay for basic expenses. In California, the average unemployment check is $297 a week.


ABC 7 Says… The political battle to extend unemployment benefits continues in Washington, but the impact of lawmakers failing to reach agreement by last night’s deadline is already being felt in the Bay Area.

California’s unemployment rate is the third highest in the nation and the state is expected to be hit the hardest if these unemployment benefits are reduced.

For those who have been out of work the longest times are not only tough, they are downright discouraging.

Unemployment Extension 12/06/10: An agreement has been reached to extend federal unemployment insurance for 13 months. This means that federal extended unemployment benefits (up to 99 weeks in states with high unemployment) will continue through 2011.

Unemployment Extension Update 12/01/10: Federal extended unemployment benefits have expired. Unless Congress passes a retroactive extension of unemployment, two million Americans will lose unemployment benefits immediately with more to follow. Unemployed workers should check with their state unemployment office for details on the status of their unemployment claim.

For many investors, Europe’s recent struggles have conjured fears akin to those that resulted from the late-2008 meltdown of Lehman Brothers Holdings, which roiled the U.S. financial system.
